Inspired by Future Changemakers: My Experience at COP 16 Riyadh.

By Batoul Smari, Global Schools Advocate.

I had the opportunity to participate in the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It was a truly transformative experience. As a Global Schools Advocate, I was inspired by the meaningful discussions and partnerships that support education in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The event brought together educators, changemakers, and remarkable young leaders from SEK Riyadh International School, each sharing unique perspectives on sustainability. Their insights reinforced the idea that education is key to driving real change.

One of the most exciting moments was seeing our students participate in the Green Zone, where innovation and sustainability come together. They showcased impressive projects that integrated the SDGs into both education and daily life. From creative waste management strategies to community engagement initiatives, their work demonstrated the power young people have to create change. Their efforts proved that the hands shaping our future can also lead us toward a more sustainable present.

The confidence our students displayed was truly inspiring. As one student put it, "We don’t just learn about sustainability; we live it and share it with our community." Their presentations captivated the audience and highlighted the crucial role of education in empowering young people to take meaningful action.

In the Blue Zone, I joined fellow educators and changemakers in a thought-provoking discussion on how education connects with land restoration. I was deeply inspired by the innovative strategies shared for integrating the SDGs into school curricula. These conversations emphasized that education’s impact extends far beyond the classroom. We all recognized that true change happens when students are encouraged to think critically, act responsibly, and engage with global challenges.

A central theme throughout the discussions was the importance of land restoration and climate education. Panelists stressed the need for collaboration between schools, policymakers, and communities to strengthen ecological literacy. The key takeaway was clear: by incorporating environmental education into our school systems, we can empower students to become responsible stewards of our planet.

COP 16 reinforced my belief that education is the foundation of sustainable development. To cultivate a culture of environmental awareness and action, we must equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to address urgent global challenges. Reflecting on my experience, I feel immense pride in our students and educators at SEK Riyadh International School. Our journey proves that change is possible through education.

As I continue advocating for the integration of the SDGs into educational practices, I will carry forward the insights from COP 16 Riyadh and turn them into action. I am truly grateful to Global Schools for giving our students and me the opportunity to participate in these important discussions. Witnessing the incredible efforts of educators and students worldwide in the field of land restoration has been both humbling and motivating.
